How to Add or Remove Strikethrough Text in Google Docs

Google Docs is a very efficient word processor, providing a concise user interface for a hassle-free writing experience. But sometimes, web applications can feel too restricted. Unlike rivals Microsoft Word, you don’t have access to many text formatting options on the Google Docs toolbar. And one important drawback is the way to add or delete crossed text.

The ability to search text can be very useful when you want the original text related to the revision to remain before completing editing. Strikethrough formatting is useful when collaborating on documents with others, especially if you don’t like the Suggestion mode in Google Docs.

Although no options are visible, Google Docs supports crossed out text functionality. Let’s start by checking what you need to do to add or delete crossed text in the Google Docs web application on the desktop. We will then look at doing the same thing on the Google Docs mobile app for Android and iOS.

Add Strikethrough Text – Google Docs

There are several ways to strike via text in Google Docs on Windows and macOS. The first method involves diving into the word processor format menu – it’s rather tedious to use when doing repetitive strikes. However, it’s always better to know where the formatting options are in a web application. The second method is much faster, especially if you like using keyboard shortcuts.

1. Use the Format Menu

Start by highlighting the part of the text you want to attack.

After you’ve done that, open the Format menu, point to Text, then click Strikethrough.

And voila! Google Docs will format the highlighted text accordingly.

2. Use Keyboard Shortcuts

Highlight the part of the text that requires formatting. If you are using a Windows PC, do the Alt + Shift + 5 keyboard shortcuts to search text. On a Mac, use Command + Shift + X keystroke instead.
Remove Strikethrough Text – Google Docs

Deleting crossed text involves performing the same action that you would use to add it in the first place. You can use the Scribble option in the Format menu or keyboard shortcuts to delete strikethrough text.

1. Use the Format Menu

Highlight the section of text that has been crossed out.

Open the Format menu, point to Text, then click Strikethrough.

Google Docs will delete crossed formatting.

2. Use Keyboard Shortcuts

Highlight text, and then press Alt + Shift + 5 (Windows) or Command + Shift + X (Mac) to get rid of crossed formatting.

Striking Through Text in Google Docs on Android and iOS

On Android and iOS versions of Google Docs, striking through text can be easy or a little complicated depending on whether you are using a tablet or smartphone.

If you use Google Docs on a tablet (like iPad), you will most likely see a special Strikethrough icon (the letter S with a line in the middle), located at the top of the screen. Highlight the section of text needed, then tap the Strike icon to search the text.

On your smartphone, you must tap the Format icon (letter A with four lines), which is located in the upper right corner of the screen. It should reveal the Scribble options – tap to add strikethrough formatting.

Removing strikethrough from text is similar to adding it – highlighting text, and then tap the Scribble icon to the top of the screen or the Scribble options that are in the Format menu.

Strikethrough Text – What to Look For

When striking through text, two things are examined. First, the text still describes the last word count. If your document needs to fulfill a number of words, you must delete crossed out text to get an accurate number of words.

Second, you can expect the formatting that crossed out will bring if you plan to convert the document to an alternative file format. However, the TXT format is an exception, where you will find strings through missing. Plain text can’t carry any format, so this is something you should be aware of. But for other output formats supported by Google Docs (DOCX, PDF, EPUB, etc.), you don’t need to worry.

Send your response to Google

Striking through text in Google Docs is very easy after you understand various things. However, you might not like going into the Format menu or making a three-button shortcut when adding or removing crossed out text each time. While there’s nothing you can do to get the special Strikethrough icon on the Google Docs toolbar, the best you can expect is to send your feedback to Google and make a feature request.
